Visiting Lake Superior has been on my bucket list of great Canadian nature destinations and this was going to be the year to make it happen. So when I saw the “How to paint a Luminous Seascape” course at Fleming College Haliburton School of Art and Design I knew I had a unique opportunity to prepare for my trip.

Lake Superior is essentially a fresh water ocean with its expanse of turquoise blue water and sandy beaches. Then when the wind kicks up, the white caps appear with waves curling and crashing in on the shore.

I was inspired by 17 North Photography’s capture of this moody setting with the sun shining on the white foam of this glowing wave while ominous dark storm clouds loom in the distance.
